Wake Up Your Make-Up
Natural is nice, but sometimes you just need a little something extra. For me a pop of colour, or a subtle sheen can transform my look. And best of all, it's a simple switch that takes seconds. Therefore, if you're a gal with not a lot of time this should be right up your street.
The best way I've found to perk up my face is adding colour. If you're a nude lover I understand this can be out of your comfort zone, but trust me. If you don't want to jump in at the deep end, try a brighter blush. Nars 'Orgasm' ($30) is my daily favourite, but there's nothing quite like Tarte's 'Tipsy' ($28) for a pick me up. It's a gorgeous coral/pink that makes you glow somehow. If you do decide to pick this up, a light hand is a must. And yes, I'm speaking from experience.
If you're feeling brave, there's nothing like a bright lipstick. They do require a little upkeep during the day, but a statement lip works wonders. If you're looking a bit frazzled, drawing attention to your lips can take the pressure off a little. I have two favourite brights, one is very out there and the others relatively classic. My totally out there pick, is MAC's 'Happy Go Lucky' Amplified lipstick. It was a limited edition, but it's basically Barbie pink so there are dupes a plenty.
If hot pink isn't your thing, you can't go wrong with a red. As we're moving into Spring, I like to leave the pillar box reds behind and move to more orangey shades. The one I like, that fits the bill is Tom Ford's 'Wild Ginger' (£38). This orangey/tomato red is perfection. Wear with an otherwise bare face and you'll feel like a runway model. Before you say it, yes it's pricey, but so worth it.
In terms of colour, the boldest statement I've made is turquoise liner on my lower lash line. Cara Delevigne sported this look as part of an ad campaign and I couldn't wait to recreate it. It's definitely not something I would wear everyday, but it's a statement look I love when I wear it. To get the look, I use the Sephora Contour Eye Pencil in 23 Summer Cruise ($10). I have no idea if they still make this, but it's a great match for Cara's shade and it's Waterproof so won't budge. No one wants turquoise under eyes do they?
The most subtle way I've found to pep up my complexion is to use a liquid highlighter. Mix it with your foundation; blend onto the high points, either will get you glowing in no time. Strobing, chroming, whatever you want to call it, we need that glow apparently. My current favourite is the Nars 'Hot Sand' Illuminator ($30). The peachy shade really flatters my semi-tanned complexion and it just makes me look more alive.
A little trick I've been doing lately is using the Nars Illuminator down the front of my legs, shoulders and on my collarbone. Hello glowing, red-carpet skin. Not really relevant to the post, but I know I love a good beauty tip.
Now I've shared my secrets, leave me yours. What's your favourite way to brighten your look?
